Salt-Crusted Dried Fish Merchant in Xining Dusk

Late summer sodium-vapor light washes the weathered face of a dried-fish merchant standing near Xining. Deep wrinkles on the skin hold a thick layer of white salt crystals that catch the yellow glow. The eyes look forward with an attentive stillness, framed against a background of soft, out-of-focus city lights beginning to glow. Fine droplets of sea spray hang in the air, visible as tiny, suspended spheres that refract the street illumination. The rough texture of the skin contrasts with the smooth, metallic sheen of the salt deposits on the forehead and cheeks. A faint reflection of the orange street lamp glints in the corner of one eye, anchoring the figure in the humid, late summer air.
