Mauritanian Mantis Cleans Legs Blue Hour in in Mauritania

Mauritanian Mantis Cleans Legs Blue Hour

by Kurt Talley

Steel-blue ambient light from the clearing storm washes over a praying mantis perched on a rough, reddish-brown branch. The insect's emerald-green forelegs fold inward, the spiny edges interlocking as it meticulously wipes the segments. Droplets of rain rest on the textured exoskeleton, catching the fading twilight. Behind the sharp focus of the insect, the background dissolves into soft, dark shapes of wet vegetation typical of the Mauritanian rainy season. The creature remains motionless, a statue of patience against the cooling evening air. One droplet slides slowly down the curved tip of its left antenna.
