Early spring light flattens the horizon behind a dense wall of reeds near Santiago de Cuba, turning the vegetation into a jagged black silhouette. A praying mantis perches on a slender stalk, its raptorial forelegs folded in a rigid V-shape against the glowing sky. Fine sea spray hangs suspended in the air, catching the backlight as a field of tiny, shimmering droplets that blur the distance. The insect's exoskeleton appears as a dark, textured shape with no internal detail, defined only by the sharp outline of its head and limbs. Behind the reed bed, the faint, hazy curve of the sea meets the sky, creating a soft gradient of orange and gray. The mantis remains motionless, its stillness framed by the vertical lines of the grass stalks that surround it on three sides.
