Mason Trowel and Mortar on Scaffold Under Noon Light

A steel mason's trowel rests flat on a thick bed of wet gray mortar, its blade smeared with fresh paste. The tools sit on a wooden scaffold plank beside the exposed frame of a building shell. Heavy overcast skies diffuse the light, softening the harsh noon glare that usually defines the Mississippi summer. The wood of the scaffold shows weathered grain and splintered edges, against the smooth, viscous texture of the wet cement. Shadows fall directly beneath the trowel handle, indicating the sun's high position despite the cloud cover. A small pile of aggregate sits near the edge of the plank, ready for mixing. The metal edge of the trowel catches a dull, silver highlight against the matte gray of the mortar.
