Man Pressing Olives in Stone Mill at Night
by Nina Odom
Low tungsten light spills from a nearby window, casting a warm, yellow glow on rough-hewn stone walls and the dark, wet skin of a man working a heavy olive press. Rain streaks against the glass of the window, blurring the dark river visible just outside. The man, wearing simple, damp clothing, leans his weight into the wooden beam of the mill, his muscles tensed against the resistance of the stone. Pools of dark green oil and crushed olive pulp collect on the uneven stone floor, reflecting the dim light. A heavy iron chain hangs loosely from the ceiling beam, its links catching the light. Moisture beads on the stone surfaces, visible in the way the light diffuses through the humid air. The rhythmic pressure of the man's hands rests on the wooden beam, while the steady drumming of rain falls across the roof above.
