Miller Loading Grain at Lima Windmill Midnight
by Edward Cox
A rhythmic sweep of white light cuts through the humid midnight air, illuminating a miller hauling heavy grain sacks along a stone colonnade in Lima's Centro Historico. The wet season rests on the weathered limestone pillars, darkening the masonry where moisture pools in the deep grooves of the arches. Dramatic clouds churn overhead, partially obscuring the moon while the intermittent lighthouse beam reveals the strain in the man's posture as he grips the rough rope of the hoist chain. Glistening wet surfaces reflect the stark, fleeting illumination, highlighting the texture of the burlap sacks and the dust kicked up by the moving weight. The beam sweeps across the colonnade, catching the edge of a sack mid-air before plunging the rest of the street into shadow. One droplet of rain rolls down the rough stone capital, tracing a path through the accumulated grime.
