Lotus Bud on Qingdao Cliff Edge in along a salt-sprayed cliff edge near Qingdao

Lotus Bud on Qingdao Cliff Edge

by Valerie Farrell

Dry, brittle leaves skitter across the surface of murky water where a single lotus bud emerges from the green-brown depths. Late afternoon sun falls through an overhead canopy, casting dappled patches of gold and shadow across the rough, salt-crusted rock face nearby. The water ripples gently around the stem, reflecting the clear sky above. A gust of wind pushes dry foliage across the frame, disturbing the stillness of the pool. The bud stands tight and green against the chaotic movement of leaves. Salt spray has left a white, crystalline residue on the surrounding stone, marking the proximity to the ocean. The final texture of the bud's skin shows fine, vertical ridges catching the light.
