Upside Down Dragon Dance Reflection in in a shrine lined with lanterns in Chengdu

Upside Down Dragon Dance Reflection

by Bennett Cole

Red paper lanterns glow against a shrine ceiling that has transformed into a liquid surface. A Chinese dragon dance performer in vibrant scales moves through the space, their body and the surrounding architecture reflected upside down in the water-like expanse above. First light skims across the textured scales and the rippling water surface, creating sharp highlights where the reflection meets the solid stone floor below. The deep autumn air hangs clear, illuminating dust motes suspended near the lanterns. Layers of red fabric and golden scales recede into the distance, where the inverted reflection of the shrine pillars creates a seamless loop of stone and water. The boundary between the solid floor and the liquid ceiling dissolves into a single continuous plane of shimmering red and gold.
