Upward Rain and Lanterns at Dire Dawa Twilight

by Danny Lee

Crimson and gold paper lanterns float in a humid garden square, their warm glow reflecting off a shallow pool of rainwater. From behind the glowing orbs, silver streaks of rain ascend sharply into the darkening sky, defying gravity while the ground remains wet and slick. The monsoon air hangs heavy, visible in the glistening sheen on the lantern surfaces and the rippled texture of the water below. Distant structures fade into the twilight haze, at the base of the impossible ascent in the concrete reality of a public celebration. One lantern rim catches the silver streak, outlining the curve where water droplets hang suspended before rising.
