Kaleidoscope Eye in Meknes Arcade

by Kiara Trujillo

Honey-colored evening light falls through the glass roof of a Meknes arcade, illuminating floating dust motes in distinct shafts. A hand holds a kaleidoscope directly against an eye, its internal prisms spinning to generate concentric rings of vibrant geometric patterns. The vivid reds, blues, and golds of the spinning fragments contrast sharply with the warm, muted tones of the stone arches and tiled floor in the background. Early spring air hangs still, allowing the dust to remain suspended in the beams. Negative space frames the subject on all sides, showing the solitary figure against the architectural depth. The sharp edge of the brass tube rests against the skin, creating a crisp boundary between the organic face and the manufactured toy. A shadow falls across the cheekbone, defined by the angle of the low sun.
