Jazz Quartet in Bimbo Basement Before Dawn
by Ethan Ware
Humid air hangs heavy in the dim basement, visible as a soft haze catching the warm glow of overhead string lights. Four musicians occupy the edge of the frame, their instruments reflecting the amber illumination against the rough, unfinished walls. The saxophonist leans into a curve, while the bassist stands rooted in shadow, fingers pressing deep into the wood. Sweat glistens on foreheads, and the damp atmosphere rests on the fabric of their shirts. Dust motes drift slowly in the light beams, suspended in the stillness before dawn. The floorboards show signs of wear, worn smooth by decades of dancing feet. A faint sheen of moisture coats the brass of the trumpet, mirroring the string lights above. at the edge is a droplet of condensation sliding down the glass of a water bottle near the drummer's kit.
