String Quartet in Lanzhou Station Before Dawn
Low tungsten light falls through high windows, washing the polished concrete floor of the Lanzhou railway concourse in warm amber tones. Four musicians in dark formal wear stand in a semi-circle, their instruments catching the dim morning illumination. Outside the vast glass panes, heavy monsoon clouds hang low, blurring the sky into a soft gray backdrop. Reflections on the wet, glossy floor create a symmetrical mirror image of the performers and the arched ceiling structure above. Rain streaks the exterior glass, distorting the view of the station's industrial pillars. A violinist's bow rests against a string, poised in mid-air, while the polished floor reflects the musicians' silhouettes upside down, merging with the actual figures to form a continuous, doubled composition.
