Ivy Draped Curtain Wall Ruin Portsmouth

by Layla McMahon

Sunlight falls through a canopy of turning leaves, dappling the weathered stone of an ancient curtain wall near Portsmouth. Thick ivy climbs the crumbling masonry, its green leaves against the pale, eroded surface of the ruin. Narrow arrow slits pierce the wall, framing a view of the countryside beyond where early autumn colors begin to tint the distant trees. The stone appears damp, holding moisture within its crevices, while the wall stands silhouetted against the bright morning sky. Vines drape heavily over the top edge, and shadows stretch across the rough texture of the rock. One jagged fragment of stone rests on the lower ledge, catching a glint of reflected light.
