Irrigated Onion Furrow in Buenos Aires

by Ruth Vega

Silver strands of irrigation water coat the slender green stalks of young onions growing in a precise furrow. Dappled sunlight falls through overhead tea leaves, casting shifting patches of bright white and deep shadow across the damp soil. Low ground fog pools in the depressions between rows, softening the transition from the cultivated earth to the darker background of the plantation. The dry season leaves the surrounding grass pale and brittle, against the wet sheen on the crops. Leading lines of the furrow guide the gaze toward the dense foliage of the tea bushes at the edge of the field. A droplet rests on the tip of a single onion leaf, catching the midday light.
