Twilight Silhouette of Irrigated Onion Furrow in beside stacked hay bales in the Rhine Valley

Twilight Silhouette of Irrigated Onion Furrow

by Jeremy Salazar

Silver droplets rest on the slender green blades of young onions arranged in a precise furrow. Behind the crop, large rectangular hay bales stack in a dark, solid wall against the deepening blue of the Rhine Valley twilight. A brief sun shower catches the light, turning the water on the leaves into bright, scattered diamonds while the background remains in deep silhouette. The dry season air leaves the soil between rows cracked and dusty, against the wet foliage. The horizon line sits low, showing the verticality of the onion stalks and the heavy bales beside them. at the edge is a single bead of water rolling down a leaf tip to drop onto the dark earth below.
