Under the flat, shadowless noon light of a Buenos Aires balcony, a cluster of umbrellas in faded primary colors hangs from a rusted iron railing, their canopies folded tight against the heat. Below, the street is a blur of white taxi roofs and green bus tops, visible through the gaps in the fabric. One broom leans against the stucco wall, its straw bristles worn flat and dusty, resting near a potted hydrangea with heavy blue heads drooping under the sun.
