Hydrant Valve in Alexandria in in Alexandria, Egypt

Hydrant Valve in Alexandria

by Ezra Pruitt

Rain-slicked asphalt in the Montazah district reflects the bruised purple sky of early morning, framing a narrow service lane where a municipal worker in a high-visibility vest maneuvers a heavy metal wrench to tighten a valve on a rusted hydrant. Beside him, a stack of white folding tables, damp and stacked precariously, leans against a weathered stucco wall, their plastic legs glistening with fresh moisture. The first light breaks through low clouds, casting long, sharp shadows that cut across the wet pavement and highlight the texture of the peeling paint on a nearby pharmacy shutter.
