Vendor at First Light
by Isla Long
First light after rain washes over a narrow Cairo alley, where a vendor balances a stack of chipped enamel bowls on his rolling cart. The wet asphalt reflects the soft gray sky, against the vibrant turquoise paint of a nearby shopfront. A man in a white galabeya adjusts the cart’s wheels, his hands gripping the cold metal frame. In the background, a traditional wooden door with an iron latch stands slightly ajar, revealing a glimpse of a dimly lit interior. Steam rises from a nearby tea kettle, blurring the air slightly. A quiet moment of daily routine, with the rain-slicked streets and the vendor’s prepared setup showing anticipation before the day’s bustle begins.
