Howler Monkey Bellowing in Rainy Season Canopy in in Northern Territory

Howler Monkey Bellowing in Rainy Season Canopy

by Franklin Moran

Honeyed evening light wraps around a dense canopy in the Northern Territory, filtering through the heavy, wet air of the rainy season. A thick layer of fog softens the distant tree line while keeping the foreground foliage sharp and glistening with recent rain. The frame within a frame is formed by the interlocking branches of a massive fig tree, focusing attention on a howler monkey perched high above. Its dark fur absorbs the low-angle sun, against the pale mist behind it. The monkey's mouth is wide open in a bellow, revealing the pink interior and teeth. Dew rests on the rough bark of the framing branches, and a single leaf droops heavily from a lower limb, dripping water onto the shadowed ground below.
