Haitian Rara Festival Bamboo Horns Rio Waterfront Night in at a waterfront celebration in Centro, Rio de Janeiro

Haitian Rara Festival Bamboo Horns Rio Waterfront Night

by Krystal Payne

Deep shadows swallow the lower half of the frame while a thin rim of cool light outlines the silhouettes of musicians holding tall bamboo horns. The wet season fog rests on the air, softening the distant glow of Rio de Janeiro city lights along the waterfront horizon. Participants stand in perfect symmetrical rows, their forms merging into a dark, unified line against the fading twilight. The bamboo stalks rise vertically, their rough textures barely visible against the encroaching night. One reflection of a distant streetlamp shimmers on the damp pavement at the very bottom edge, anchoring the composition in the wet, hazy air of the Centro celebration.
