Great Zimbabwe Stone Wall on Vientiane Pier in on a pier railing in Vientiane

Great Zimbabwe Stone Wall on Vientiane Pier

by Gilbert McKay

Honey-colored light spills across a section of dry-stone masonry, revealing the intricate fit of irregular granite blocks without mortar. The rough, weathered texture of the ancient wall contrasts sharply with the smooth, painted metal of the pier railing in Vientiane. Outside the window, the heavy saturation of the rainy season darkens the sky, while droplets of water bead on the clean glass pane. The stone structure rests directly against the indoor railing, its earthy ochre tones glowing under the pre-dusk illumination. Sharp edges of the granite catch the fading light, creating a stark boundary between the historic masonry and the modern industrial frame. one drop of condensation slides down the glass, marking the edge of the enclosure.
