Candlestick on Pier Railing Noon Light

by Charlene Garrison

Pale walls reflect a flat, even glow across a worn wooden railing on a pier near Port-de-Paix. A brass candlestick rests centrally, its surface marked by years of handling and tarnish. Rain-slicked wood beneath shows dark streaks from the current rainy season, against the dry, dusty metal of the fixture. Indirect light bounces softly off the surrounding surfaces, eliminating harsh shadows while highlighting the texture of the wood grain and the smooth, oxidized curves of the candleholder. The railing edge cuts diagonally through the frame, leading toward the open space beyond. one drop of water rests on the base of the candlestick, resting on the rough wood.
