Deep indigo night swallows the sky above a stone courtyard in Yogyakarta, where the Sekaten festival unfolds under artificial tungsten light. Musicians in traditional attire sit cross-legged on woven mats, their hands poised over bronze gongs and metal xylophones that gleam in the harsh, warm glow. The light carves sharp shadows across their faces and the intricate carvings of the wooden instruments. A stiff wind whips loose threads on their sarongs and rattles the hanging lamps, creating a dynamic tension in the stillness of the stage space. The stone floor reflects the amber illumination, against the deep black void surrounding the performance area. In the corner, a single bronze gong rests on a wooden stand, its surface catching the edge of the light.
