Fossil Rib Cage in Desert Dig Trench Nouakchott

by Ronald Fitzpatrick

Sand dunes rise in gentle waves under a sky heavy with dramatic, textured clouds during late afternoon. In the center of a rectangular excavation trench, a prehistoric rib cage lies exposed against the pale, cool-season soil. Silver foil strips wrap around the curved bones, creating sharp, reflective lines that contrast with the matte, dusty surface of the fossil. The symmetrical arrangement of the trench walls frames the specimen perfectly, drawing focus to the intersection of natural history and scientific preservation. Soft skylight fills the depression, casting gentle shadows that define the curvature of each vertebra and rib without harsh contrast. at the edge rests on the edge of a foil strip where it catches the fading sun, glowing brighter than the surrounding ochre sand.
