Ferryman Pulls Cable Ferry Across Kansai River at Sunset

by Dennis Conley

Golden light spills across a wide river in Kansai, where a lone ferryman stands on a narrow causeway, gripping a thick steel cable to haul a flat wooden ferry across the water. The midsummer air shimmers with a visible heat haze that blurs the distant shoreline and softens the edges of the reeds. Long shadows stretch from the ferryman's weathered figure toward the water, while the sky transitions from burning orange to deep violet above the horizon. The wooden planks of the ferry show grain and wear, against the smooth, rippling surface of the river. A metal pulley system glints in the fading sun, anchoring the cable that cuts diagonally across the frame. at the edge rests on the tension line of the cable, glowing faintly against the darkening water.
