Deep Shadowed Sardinian Foothills Before Sunrise in from a ridge above layered foothills in Sardinia

Deep Shadowed Sardinian Foothills Before Sunrise

by Calvin Avila

Cool stillness hangs over the layered foothills of Sardinia, where deep shadows swallow the lower slopes in late spring. Low-hanging clouds press against the ridgeline, blurring the horizon into a soft gray mass. A sharp rim of pale light traces the upper edges of the hills, separating the dark foreground from the overcast sky. Rugged stone textures and muted green vegetation rest on the steep inclines, visible only where the faint illumination falls across the highest crests. The low angle accentuates the solid wall of geology rising against the sky, while fine details of rock surfaces emerge at the very edge of the light, leaving the valleys in absolute darkness.
