Sodium-vapor shadows stretch across a wet industrial worksite in Somalia as predawn darkness holds the sky. A large tailings pond dominates the foreground, its surface rippling with wet season rain. The water glows with an unnatural turquoise hue from suspended chemicals, mirroring the harsh orange flare of a nearby welding torch. Thick dust coats the dry earth surrounding the slurry, clumping where the recent moisture has settled.
