Midnight Water Forge Beside Stream in Harar

by Nikolai Vance

String lights cast a warm, uneven glow across a water-powered forge situated next to a rushing stream in Harar. The wet season has left the ground slick and dark, reflecting the orange sparks flying from the trip hammer. Low-hanging clouds press against the ceiling of the welding bay, diffusing the light into a soft haze. Converging lines of the metal framework and stone floor guide toward a deep vanishing point where the water wheel turns. Rust streaks the iron surfaces, against the smooth, wet stones of the stream bank. one drop of water hangs from a rusted rivet on the hammer's frame, catching the light before falling.
