Dawn Light on Markham Levee Service Road in beneath transmission towers near Markham

Dawn Light on Markham Levee Service Road

by Dominick Guevara

First rays of sunrise cut through a thick, low-hanging fog that rests on the wet asphalt of a levee service road near the Markham river mouth. Tall transmission towers rise on either side, their steel latticework disappearing into the mist while their bases rest on concrete pads. The road stretches forward with converging lines, guiding toward a distant vanishing point where the water meets the sky. Monsoon moisture coats the surface, reflecting the pale orange and grey light in a slick sheen. Rumble strips along the edges create a rhythmic texture against the smooth, dark pavement. The scene is defined by the stark geometry of the infrastructure standing firm against the soft, diffused morning haze. A faint shadow of a tower leg falls across the wet ground, marking the precise angle of the rising sun.
