Spring Furrows Beside Hay Bales in Hubei

by Geraldine Curry

Dark, turned earth forms rhythmic furrows that stretch across the foreground, their ridges catching the sharp midmorning sun. Behind these fresh lines of soil, rectangular hay bales stack in neat, weathered rows, their golden fibers against the deep brown ground. A low layer of ground fog pools in the hollows between the fields, softening the base of the hay stacks while the upper slopes remain clear under the dry mountain light. The scene sits in early spring, marked by the raw, unplanted soil and the dormant texture of the bales. Light cuts across the furrow walls, creating high-contrast shadows that define the depth of the plow cuts. One shadow from the nearest hay bale falls sharply across the wetter, darker soil at the edge of the frame.
