Stacked Poultry Crates in Luxembourg Barn Light

by Barbara Sanders

Galvanized metal crates stack high near a weathered water trough, their corrugated surfaces catching the sharp, tropical-bright late afternoon sun. Straw bales rest against the stack, their golden fibers against the cool gray daylight filtering through the windbreak. Thin ground fog pools in the hollows between the crates and the muddy earth, softening the base of the galvanized walls. A thick rope lies coiled on the ground, its twisted fibers distinct against the scattered paper scraps. Rubber mats show wear patterns from heavy boots, lying flat beneath the metal stack. The low angle emphasizes the height of the crates, making the galvanized ridges appear as vertical lines stretching toward the sky. One shadow stretches long across the straw, ending at the edge of a rubber mat.
