In the dappled shade of an old courtyard in Beijing, a wooden workbench bears the scars of daily use, its surface cluttered with the tools of a local craftsman. A pair of rusted garden shears rests near a worn vise, their handles gripped by years of labor, while a simple glass jar holds a collection of mismatched nails. The bright late morning sun falls through the leaves of a nearby persimmon tree, casting sharp, geometric shadows across the concrete floor. Nearby, a child’s colorful kite leans against a brick wall, its bamboo frame visible through the taut paper, hinting at a pause in play.
