A bright late morning sun slices through the lattice screens of a machiya courtyard, casting sharp geometric shadows across damp concrete paving stones. In the foreground, a weathered wooden workbench holds a single white ceramic soap bottle and a brass hand mirror reflecting the blurred green of ivy vines climbing the adjacent plaster wall. Behind this intimate cluster, a narrow alleyway opens to the street where a local resident in a simple apron sweeps fallen maple leaves with a bamboo broom.
