Concrete Workbench in Shanghai
by Paige Trejo
Under the flat, shadowless noon light of a Shanghai residential courtyard, a weathered concrete workbench serves as the anchor for a cluster of daily utility. A heavy steel mallet rests beside a ceramic ashtray filled with gray cigarette butts, evidence of a recent pause in manual labor. The surface is scarred and stained, against the sleek, rusted door latch on the adjacent aluminum security gate. In the background, a white umbrella stand holds collapsed parasols, while a floor lamp leans against the wall, unused in the daylight. The quiet, functional clutter of a shared living space, where tools and debris coexist without order, defined by the harsh, even illumination that exposes every scratch and stain.
