Seamstress Working in Beijing
by Erica Berg
Late afternoon sun slants through the open doorway of a narrow hutong tailor shop, illuminating a chaotic but lived-in workbench. A seamstress in a faded floral blouse leans over a heavy iron machine, her hands guiding a bolt of bright turquoise silk with practiced precision. On the scarred wooden surface nearby, a yellow measuring tape curls loosely beside a small ceramic bowl holding pins and scissors. The warm light catches the brass hinge of a nearby cabinet, against the rough, peeling red paint of the exterior wall visible through the door. Outside, the shadow of a bicycle wheel stretches across the dusty concrete, at the base of the intimate interior scene in the bustling rhythm of the alley.
