Cracked Hyperbolic Cooling Tower Samawah Noon

by Micheal Carey

Midsummer noon casts a flat, unyielding glare across the massive hyperbolic shell of a decaying industrial cooling tower near Samawah. The structure stands as a monument of utilitarian force, its concrete surface fractured by deep, jagged cracks that run vertically along the curved expanse. Hard white light reflects off the rough, weathered textures, highlighting the peeling layers of paint and the exposed aggregate beneath. The humid air hangs heavy in the heat, settling over the vast, empty ground that stretches to the horizon. Leading lines formed by the tower's tapering curves draw the eye upward toward the broken apex, where a large section of the shell has collapsed inward. A final shard of concrete hangs precariously from the rim, casting a sharp, dark shadow against the lighter interior wall.
