Concrete Brutalist University Cloister in Guadalajara Rain

by Barbara Pineda

Heavy grey concrete slabs form the massive pillars of a university cloister in Guadalajara, their raw surfaces etched with vertical streaks from the ongoing monsoon drizzle. Water beads and runs down the textured stone, darkening the pale aggregate where it touches. Students in dark raincoats huddle under the sheltered walkway, heads bent over open notebooks and laptops, their focus unwavering despite the wet air. The late afternoon sun breaks through the heavy cloud cover, casting sharp, wet shadows across the tiled floor. Raindrops ripple in small puddles that collect in the low spots of the pavement, reflecting the overcast sky. One student adjusts their umbrella, the black fabric glistening under the diffuse light, while the heavy masonry walls rise steeply around them, creating a quiet, enclosed sanctuary of study.
