Civic Candle Vigil on City Hall Steps
by Kiara Correa
Cold silver dawn light falls through thick, low-hanging fog to illuminate rows of small candles arranged on the wide stone steps of a civic building in al-Bab. The flames flicker with a steady, warm orange glow that contrasts sharply against the cool, misty atmosphere. Dramatic, heavy clouds hang low in the sky, their gray undersides reflecting the dim morning light. In the foreground, the blurred silhouette of a person's shoulder frames the view, looking out toward the flickering lights. The stone surface appears damp and textured, catching the soft radiance of the wax flames. Each candle stands upright in a small holder, creating a rhythmic pattern of light that stretches up the staircase toward the building's entrance.
