Child Reading in Colchester Atelier Under Ocean Doorway
by Tammy West
Soft tungsten lamplight spills from a table inside a Colchester atelier, illuminating a blanket fort constructed of heavy canvas and draped linens. A child sits cross-legged inside the structure, clutching an open book while a flashlight beam cuts through the fabric shadows. The room features high ceilings with exposed wooden beams and scattered art supplies on the floor. Along the right wall, where a solid partition should stand, a rectangular doorway opens directly into the open ocean. Dark monsoon waves crash against the threshold, sending a sheet of translucent water flowing across the wooden floorboards. Muted reflections of the child and the fort ripple in the shallow sea water pooling at the room's base. The impossible ocean horizon aligns perfectly with the room's interior lighting, creating a seamless transition between the dry atelier interior and the wet, churning sea beyond the frame.
