Child Reading Transparent Fort in Erbil Night
by Joann Hoover
Soft tungsten lamplight fills the studio space in Erbil, illuminating a child seated within a blanket fort constructed of woven fabrics in deep earth tones. The blanket structure itself is the impossible element, rendered as solid glass while retaining the texture and color of the original cloth. A flashlight beam cuts through the transparent walls, casting sharp geometric shadows on the floor. Outside the fort, monsoon rain streaks against a studio window, creating vertical lines of silver light that fall across the concrete floor. The child holds a book open, their face lit by the small, warm glow of the flashlight. Negative space surrounds the scene, showing the isolation of the glowing, transparent shelter against the dark, rainy studio backdrop. The glass-like fabric reflects the rain streaks without breaking the illusion of the woven material.
