Toddler Walking Into Ocean Through Wall Dawn
by Sadie Chung
Pale silver dawn light spills across wet sand in Gaziantep, illuminating a toddler walking barefoot toward a solid concrete wall that should block the view. Instead, the wall dissolves into a jagged doorway opening directly onto an open ocean horizon. Dramatic clouds stack heavily above the water, their dark undersides reflecting in the shallow tide pooling around the child's feet. The wet sand glistens with a smooth, glassy texture, leading the eye straight to the impossible threshold. Early winter chill is suggested by the muted gray tones of the sky and the toddler's heavy knit sweater. A sharp shadow stretches long behind the child, cast by the low, pale sun, anchoring the impossible opening in the physical reality of the beach. The edge of the concrete wall meets the water without a seam, a seamless transition from solid masonry to liquid sea.
