Car Fender in Los Angeles

Flat noon light bleaches the asphalt of a South LA auto shop bay, exposing the peeling red primer on a lifted sedan’s wheel well. A mechanic in grease-stained coveralls kneels by the tire, using a heavy steel burnisher to smooth out a deep gouge in the fender. Beside him, a plastic tool caddy sits open, spilling out a few wrenches and a rusted hinge from a detached door panel. The heat shimmers off the hood, distorting the view of the chain-link fence in the background. The mechanic’s hand moves with practiced rhythm, ignoring the glare. A speckled stoneware coffee mug rests precariously on the fender, catching the harsh light.
