Mechanic Working in Austin
by Solomon Leon
Flat noon light bleaches the concrete apron of a South Austin auto shop where a mechanic kneels beside a lifted truck, his shadow sharp and short beneath the chassis. In the immediate foreground, a weathered wash basin sits on a cinder block, filled with soapy water that reflects the harsh white sky, while a claw hammer rests casually on the rim. The background reveals a chain-link fence and the blurred shapes of parked sedans, at the base of the scene in the industrial texture of the city's eastern edge. One drop of water falls from the basin's edge, striking the surface and sending a ripple across the reflection of the truck's tire.
