Chrome Bumper in Durban

by Darren Swain

Under the harsh, flat glare of a Durban noon, a mechanic’s workshop front opens directly onto the street, blurring the line between indoor labor and public transit. A young apprentice wipes grease from a chrome bumper with a faded apron, his hands leaving temporary smudges on the polished metal that catch the bright overhead light. Behind him, peg rails hold an assortment of worn wrenches and chipped blue enamel tool caddies, their colors muted by years of industrial use. To the side, a dust mop leans against a stack of beach towels, a surreal but common sight in this coastal city where work and leisure often share the same threshold.
