Muffin Tins in Ho Chi Minh City

by Charles McCall

The bright late morning sun cuts through the corrugated metal awning of a sidewalk repair stall in District 1, casting sharp geometric shadows across a chaotic workbench. A mechanic, sleeves rolled up, leans over a disassembled motorbike engine, his hands greasy and precise. Resting on a stack of yellow plastic crates are two battered muffin tins, repurposed to hold tiny screws and bolts, their dented surfaces reflecting the harsh daylight. Nearby, a faded pink pillow cover is draped over a stool, protecting it from oil splatters, while a cracked glass vase holds a wilting frangipani branch, its petals scattered on the concrete.
