Wiping Hands in Madrid

Flat noon light washes over a sun-bleached Madrid street corner where a local mechanic wipes grease from his hands with a faded blue dish towel. Behind him, a rusted metal shutter hangs slightly ajar, revealing the cluttered interior of a small repair shop. On the workbench visible through the gap, a socket wrench rests beside a stack of old recipe tins, their labels worn by years of use. The heat shimmers off the asphalt, distorting the shadows cast by the hanging laundry lines strung across the alley. A passerby pauses to adjust a pair of prayer beads hanging from their belt, the movement catching the harsh overhead sun.
