Bookmaker Gilds Leather in Cambridge Evening
by Caitlin Neal
Warm amber string lights hang overhead, casting a soft glow on a focused craftsman seated at a sturdy wooden workbench in a Cambridge workshop. The early autumn air settles on the clear evening sky visible through a high window, but the room remains intimate and enclosed. A bookmaker's hands, steady and precise, press a thin sheet of gold leaf onto the dark, textured grain of a leather book cover. The leather shows signs of wear and age, against the fresh, metallic sheen of the gilding. In the immediate foreground, blurred shapes of tools and materials create a soft bokeh effect, drawing the eye to the sharp detail of the gilding process. The craftsman's expression is one of fierce determination, his brow furrowed as he ensures every edge is perfectly aligned. One speck of gold dust rests on the edge of the workbench.
