Beet Seedlings Under Bird Net in Himalayan Soil in beside a tractor track through dark soil in the Himalayas

Beet Seedlings Under Bird Net in Himalayan Soil

by Isabelle Pope

Rows of tiny green beet seedlings push through dark, tilled earth beside a compacted tractor track. Taut bird-netting stretches in parallel lines overhead, casting thin, rhythmic shadows across the furrows. Flat noon light bleaches the colors, turning the soil a deep charcoal while the young leaves glow with translucent chlorophyll. Low-lying ground fog pools in the furthest depressions, softening the horizon where the field meets the distant mountain slope. The netting creates a grid that forces the eye down the length of the crop, showing the urgency of the harvest season. One shadow from a seedling stem falls sharply against the adjacent ridge of dark soil.
