Olive Nets Spread Under Twisted Trunks at Dawn in at the edge of a tea plantation in Devonport, Auckland

Olive Nets Spread Under Twisted Trunks at Dawn

by Vicki Cote

Low-hanging clouds press against the horizon where mist rests on the earth beneath gnarled olive trunks. Nets stretch taut across the grove, their synthetic fibers catching the pale first light of dawn. The twisted bark shows deep fissures and rough textures, against the smooth, pale gray of the mesh. In the background, the orderly rows of tea bushes from the adjacent plantation rise gently, their dark green leaves distinct from the olive foliage. The ground remains damp and shadowed, while the low sun touches the mist, creating a thin layer of illumination along the forest floor. One shadow from a thick branch falls sharply across the edge of a net, marking the precise angle of the rising light.
