Cranberry Bog Harvest at Sunset in Holguin Rice Paddies

by Darryl Duncan

Scarlet water fills terraced bogs that mimic the stepped geometry of rice paddies in Holguin. Low-angle orange light from the setting sun reflects intensely off the flooded surfaces, turning the cranberry patch into a glowing ribbon of red. Patches of ground fog pool in the lowest depressions between the earthen ridges, softening the transition from water to soil. The dry season leaves the surrounding vegetation crisp and golden against the vivid harvest color. Wooden stakes mark the boundaries of the flooded sections, standing dark and vertical against the bright liquid. Shadows stretch long across the wet ground, defining the terraced contours. One berry cluster floats near a wooden marker, its deep red skin catching the last rays of sunlight.
